However, the Super 12 doesn't involve international teams. These teams are from a specific area of each country, like the Wellington Hurricanes or the Auckland Blues. As mentioned on the NZRU page, New Zealand has 5 teams, South Africa 4, and Australia 3.
The winner of the S12 '03 was the amazing Auckland Blues, who defeated the Canterbury Crusaders in a stunning final. Auckland's trophy cabinet is looking quite impressive these days -- will they be able to win the S12 trophy again? It would certainly be a good start to the new year for them if it occurs.
On the other hand, I'd prefer it if they didn't win -- I'm a Hurricanes chick! (Although the Blues are my 2nd team, but only because some of my fave players play for Auckland!)
This year there are several big players noticeably missing -- Christian Cullen gone from the Hurricanes squad, and Taine Randell gone from the Highlanders. (Ahem, JOHN MITCHELL!) What was I saying?
Although a few of our older, experienced, brilliant players are gone, we've got plenty of young talent on the field. Keep an eye out for Auckland wingers Joe Rokocoko and Rupeni Caucaunibuca, and Canterbury's Dan Carter. Although he's a little older, watch for Carlos Spencer, who baffles us all with his stunning plays and (although slightly unreliable) kicking. Ma'a Nonu, Wellington's other dreadlocked centre is also one to watch for, taking Tana Umaga's usual spot at cantre as the veteran starts the season in the stands due to injury. Those are only a few of New Zealand's new talent, and no doubt more will be realised during the competition.
As for the winners this year - -I reckon it'll be a Kiwi team for sure. I think the Blues have a very good shot, although I want the Hurricanes to win! I think the 'Canes have a decent shot, but Blues will be the ones to watch for...
